DTU continues to be a name well-known for technical expertise and experience in Wind Energy. It is one of the few institutions offering a dedicated Master program in Wind Energy and also welcomes exchange students wishing to gain specialization in Wind Energy. The university thus attracts talented students from all over the world. For each of these students, an inclusive and supportive environment is created right from the beginning of student life through the DTU Introduction Week. The students are introduced to each other and to all that the university has to offer in terms of facilities, services, clubs, etc.    The Wind Energy Student Association (WESA) at DTU played an active role in welcoming new Wind Energy students at the start of the semester. WESA was involved during the Introduction Week. Mareen Tiedemann, President of the founding board of WESA, welcomed students and delivered an Inspiration Talk about studying Wind Energy and about how the masters program is like at DTU, drawing on examples from her own experience as well as those of others. Thanasis Kormas, the current WESA President, introduced the students to WESA and helped answer many practical questions during the Q&A session. WESA serves as a platform for students to connect with each other and the industry.                          WESA also had a very successful Semester Kick Off Event on Thursday, 13 September where new students met “senior” students who were available as “Advisers” on different courses they took. The event included a fun teambuilding challenge imitating the “Group Work” model of project work seen in courses at DTU.   WESA and DTU Wind Energy are working together to ensure that the best of support, opportunities and facilities are available to students. The upcoming “Risø Visit” on 10 October is an example of this cooperation. The visit is intended as a way for new Wind Energy students to become acquainted with the facilities, personnel and research ongoing in Wind Energy at DTU. WESA and Aeolus continued the tradition and hosted the holiday party for the second year in a row. On Thursday 28.09.2017 WESA hosted Ørsted (DONG Energy) at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU. During their visit, the professionals from Ørsted, after delivering very interesting presentations, gave the students the opportunity to participate in the BEACON contest.  BEACON Contest   Students were given a series of data obtained by 2 radars scanning the company's Westermost Rough offshore wind farm. The task was the visualization of the data that would help them enhance their quantitative skills by interpreting big data sets and visualizing them optimally, giving wind engineers the opportunity of exploiting their huge untapped potential. The winner of the contest would win 3000DKK.  The winner   Several students were interested in the contest and after receiving the data, they worked in producing the most accurate visualization. The winner of the BEACON contest was Mads Baungaard. Mads applied his knowledge in MATLAB and created an impressive visualization of the wakes, which can be seen below:       Mads said a few words regarding his work:   ''I wanted to create a 3D plot of the wakes in the wind farm similar to the famous Horns Rev pictures. For this purpose I created a volume grid of horizantal wind speeds and visualized these with Matlabs isosurface function (which is the "3D-equivalent" of countour lines). Finally, I made a "stick model" representation of the wind turbines using cylinders and zoomed in on the northern part of the wind farm.'' On Thursday, 02.11.2017, WESA proudly hosted Vestas at DTU, the Technical University of Denmark. The Danish wind turbine manufacturer, Vestas, is the World Market Leader and a pioneering presence in the Wind Energy industry. With a wealth of industry experience and expertise, Vestas was very keen on sharing technical know-how and challenges with WESA members at DTU.  The People   The evening was filled with immersive presentations from 5 Vestas Engineers from different verticals. WESA was glad to see former WESA president and now Engineer at Vestas, Mareen Tiedemann start off the session introducing her colleagues and her work at Vestas. Next, Anders G. Frisenette (Manager – Blades) presented Vestas as a company with a global presence and a culture of innovation, and also one that is especially keen on being an employer of choice for future DTU graduates. Søren Bøgelund Madsen (from Tower New Products), Beatriz Callejo Rodríguez (Plant Control Engineering), Henning Bjerregaard (Generator Engineering) and Ivan Sønderby (Director - Tools & Technologies) also delivered informative presentations on topics ranging from tower vibration dampers, drivetrain system integration, challenges in turbine blade design and power plant control, to the upcoming Kennedy Energy Park Project involving Wind+PV+Energy Storage technology. The event was very interactive with over 60 DTU students who enthusiastically participated in Q&A sessions and an engaging quiz on Wind Energy.  About Wind   Also, a few turbine components such as generator slipring brushes, a blade cross-section, generator stator cut-section and a tower bolt, were on display for DTU students. Student project proposals were shared by Vestas to give an insight into the kind of work that students could get involved at Vestas. The projects spanned a variety of topics such as ‘Validation and Improvement of Trailing-edge Noise Models for Wind Turbine Aerofoils’ and ‘Individual Pitch Control using Model Predictive Control (MPC)’.   The event was well appreciated by all participants, most of whom were master students specializing in Wind Energy.
