On Thursday 25.01.2018 the world's biggest wind turbine blade manufacturer, opened its doors to the members of WESA and Aeolus. 12 WESA members had the unique opportunity to visit the blade factory of LM Wind Power in Lunderskov, Denmark.
The company
LM Wind Power is the worlds leading component supplier to the wind industry, providing blades, service and logistics, and it is the only independent blade supplier that operates on a global basis. It has produced around 195.000 blades since 1978 and at the moment 1/5 of the installed wind turbines in the world are harvesting the energy from the wind using LM Wind Power blades
The visit
During their stay in Lunderskov, the students enjoyed the hospitality of their hosts and had the chance to learn about the company's history and evolution. The students were also introduced to the facilities of LM all around the worlds and the international mentality of the company that alongside to the innovative approach, have made LM a leader in blade production.
Two DTU Alumni and current LM employees, joined the day and presented their positions, as well as the transition from being a DTU student to becoming a successful professional. Armin Hermes talked about challenges involved in designing a wind turbine blade keeping in mind both technical aspects as well as customer requirements and Mathilde Aubrion gave some insight into the management challenges in blade production and the kind of work involved.
Finally, the participants had a glimpse of the company's research facilities, as they visited the DNV-GL certified blade testing facility, where large blades undergo static and dynamic load tests and LM's own wind tunnel, where they got an overview of wind tunnel testing and airfoil add-ons such as vortex generators, stall strips, serrations, etc.
We would like to thank LM Wind Power for offering our students the opportunity to join an exclusive visit to their production and testing facilities.
