The Wind Energy Student Association (WESA) recently hosted a successful Diversity Lunch event, dedicated to fostering inclusivity and amplifying diverse voices within the wind industry. Held with the vision of creating a more inclusive and innovative future for the sector, this event featured a dynamic panel discussion with esteemed professionals, followed by a networking lunch that encouraged meaningful connections and discussions among students and industry experts.

The panel discussion was the highlight of the event, featuring three prominent figures in the wind energy sector: Birte Holst Joergensen from DTU Wind and Energy Systems, Claire Bergaentzlé from DTU Climate and Energy Policy, and Feng Zhao from the Global Wind Energy Council. These experts shared their invaluable insights on the crucial role diversity and inclusion play in driving innovation and sustainability within the industry. Their perspectives sparked engaging conversations, shedding light on the current state of diversity in wind energy and the steps needed to create a more inclusive environment.

One of the key takeaways from the panel was the stark underrepresentation of women in the wind energy workforce. According to a survey by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), women represent only 21% of the wind energy workforce, compared to 32% in the broader renewable energy sector and 22% in traditional energy industries. This statistic underscores the need for concerted efforts to attract and retain more women in wind energy roles.

Another notable discussion point was the ambitious diversity goals set by leading companies in the industry. For instance, Vestas aims to achieve 30% women in leadership positions by 2030, up from the current 19%. This goal reflects a broader commitment to gender diversity and the belief that diverse leadership teams can drive better decision-making and innovation.

The panel also highlighted significant strides being made in promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion within the industry. Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy's LGBTQI employee affinity group, which has permanent representation on the company’s Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Governance Board, exemplifies how organizations can actively support and champion diversity at all levels. This initiative, backed by top management, ensures that diverse voices are heard and valued in company policies and practices.

Following the insightful panel discussion, attendees continued the dialogue over a delightful lunch. This informal setting provided a platform for students and professionals to connect, exchange ideas, and build meaningful relationships. The conversations extended beyond the panel topics, allowing participants to explore how they can support diversity and inclusion in their respective roles and organizations.

WESA extends its heartfelt gratitude to the incredible panelists, Birte Holst Joergensen, Claire Bergaentzlé, and Feng Zhao, for sharing their expertise and inspiring the attendees. The association also thanks all who attended and contributed to the enriching discussions. Together, we are paving the way for a more inclusive and vibrant future in wind energy.

By organizing events like the Diversity Lunch, WESA is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the wind energy sector. The association believes that fostering an inclusive environment will not only drive innovation but also create a more sustainable and equitable industry for all.
